How legacies help

Almost half our funding comes from gifts left in people’s Wills. These gifts play a huge role in our groundbreaking work to beat cancer. We are very grateful for the generosity of all our donors who help to fund our pioneering research today and in the future. We’re on the brink of major change and exciting times lie ahead - just think what your gift could help us achieve. Please consider leaving a gift in your Will to Cancer Research UK and help more people survive cancer.

Your legacy can save lives

What we have achieved with legacies left by our supporters, and all the latest news about improvements in cancer survival rates.

Saving Lives

Last year alone, Cancer Research UK spent £257 million on research - £35 million more than the previous year. Our life-saving work takes place in hospitals, institutes and universities in over 35 towns in the UK. What many people don’t realise is that almost half of this funding comes from legacies - that is, gifts left in people’s Wills. In time, these legacies benefit thousands of others, and their relatives and friends.
Progress so far

As little as 40 years ago, many children diagnosed with cancer did not survive. Fortunately, considerable progress has been made over the last few decades, both for childhood cancers and many other types of cancer:

• More than seven out of ten children with cancer are now successfully treated, compared to less than three in ten during the 1960s.

• Nearly 100% of men with testicular cancer are now cured, compared to around 70% in the 1970s.

• The five-year survival rate for breast cancer is now around 80%, compared to just 54% in the 1970s.

• The overall death rate of those diagnosed with cancer has fallen by 11% in the last 10 years.

Help us plan for the future

Many of the advances we have made would not have been possible without the promise of long-term funding from our generous supporters.

Legacies enable us to plan ground-breaking studies such as and guarantee that these studies can be seen through to fruition.

All our supporters have their own personal reasons for leaving us a legacy, but what they and you can be sure of is that whatever you give will help save lives for many years to come.
