Health & Fitness tips

Exposure to the elements can take its toll on hoary old hands and frostbitten fingers. Here’s a baker’s dozen of comforting, touchy-feely treatments to get them back on track.

For years, Atrixo has been making some of the best value everyday hand creams. The Regenerating Treatment is rich, instantly absorbed and ideal for winter.

At the luxury end of the market is Lancome Absolute Mains. This exceptional anti-ageing treatment fades dark spots and helps prevent the formation of new ones. Beautiful texture, adorable fragrance - we only wish we could afford to use it all the time.

Fluid in texture, Nivea Hand Age-Defying Q10 Plus Intensive Care takes a little bit more rubbing in than some, but provides long-lasting moisturisation.

Cyclax Aloe Vera Intensive Hand & Nail Cream makes hands feel ever so slightly slippery, but can’t be failed on price. Comes in a fresh, Green Tea version, too.

Lovely, light Eau Thermale Avene Hand Cream with Cold Cream contains soothing spring water from the Avene spa in France, and is recommended for people with sensitive skin and eczema.

Palest green Boots No 7 Enriched Hand and Nail Treatment is thick, non-sticky and cooling to the skin. The effects last for hours and it conditions nails well, too.

Gorgeous Clinique Water Therapy Moisture Glove Hand Cream smells like a springtime shower, is ultra-softening and gives excellent long-term results - one of our favourite affordable luxuries.

Clarins Age-Control Hand Lotion helps prevent the appearance of age spots. Despite being so light in texture, it silkens hands to perfection. Highly recommended.

L’Occitane Hand Cream, packed with moisturising shea butter, looks like a giant tube of Winsor & Newton. Lasts for absolutely ages.

Also from L’Occitane is Young Hands, made with extracts of immortelle - a long-lived Mediterranean flower that never wilts. We found the screw cap a bit fiddly but, that apart, it’s fragrant and very soothing.

One of our all-time favourites is Aveda Hand Relief. Thick, but instantly absorbed, it lasts for ages, gives excellent long-term results and has a fresh scent of citrus and herbs.

Barielle Professional Protective Hand Cream was originally developed for, and tested by, professional jockeys. Ultra-rich, cleanly-scented and top quality - a thoroughbred among hand creams.

From Elizabeth Arden comes Eight Hour Cream Intensive Moisturising Hand Treatment. Like the cult Eight Hour Cream itself, it’s lightweight, but richly whipped to a seductive softness and it smells divine.
