When it's cold outside, venturing into a tropical paradise is a real pleasure, and at Glasgow Botanic Gardens there are several glasshouses to choose from.
The 19th-century cast iron and steel Kibble Palace houses temperate plants from around the world and fine marble statues; displays of orchids, cacti and the National Plant Collection of begonias can be seen in the tropical glasshouse, while the Arid Adaptations house contains some of the world's most bizarre plants.
There is also an extended herb garden and a Scottish garden featuring native Scottish plants. |

Time to begin sowing. | In January - early seed sowings
1. Sow annual cornflowers, ageratum, lupins and lettuce. Shallots and onions benefit from an early start as do the tiny seeds of begonias.
2. Prepare your seed compost tray, smoothing out lumps and ensuring it fills each corner. Tap the container to settle the compost, press down to firm it.
3. Sprinkle pinches of seed from your palm on to the compost, making sure all parts of the tray are covered evenly but thinly.
4. Cover with a layer of fine vermiculite, perlite or sieved, moist compost, then water thoroughly by placing the container in a tray of water.
5. Place in a heated greenhouse or propagator. Seeds can also be grown in an unheated greenhouse or well-lit windowsill, ideally with a covering of clingfilm. Keep moist, but do not over water. |
