Get your bulbs in to light up your summer garden. | Jobs to do in the garden
On roses, cut out dead and weak shoots, suckers and half of old woody stems to the base, then mulch with well-rotted compost or manure.
Rake a handful of fertiliser around each clump of daffodils and pick off the dead flowerheads regularly.
Buy summer-flowering bulbs, pot, and keep in sheltered spot. Snowdrop or winter aconite bulbs bought in leaf should be planted now for next spring.
Check over alpine beds, topping up the gravel mulch, dividing overgrown plants, removing dead leaves or flowers, weeding carefully around plants, and feeding with slow-release fertiliser.
Take 5cm (2in) cuttings of hardy perennials such as asters, hardy chrysanthemums and sedums. Pot in 9cm (3 1/2in) of compost, water lightly, cover with clingfilm and leave in a warm, light spot. |
