Gardening tips
From flowers to vegetables, herbs and salad crops, for bumper crops bear in mind the following tips:
1. Plug trays are suitable for quick-growing perennials such as delphiniums and plants that dislike root disturbance, such as lupins, verbascum and eryngiums. Sow two seeds per cell and thin the seedlings once germinated, leaving the strongest.
2. If you have room in the greenhouse, you can sow most bedding plants now, but leave the bulk of outdoor sowings until late April.

3. Pour hot water over hard seed coats, such as peas and lupins, leave for 24 hours, then sow immediately.
4. Use a soil-based compost for most plants, or soil-free compost for seeds that germinate quickly, such as woodland plants.
5. Keep the compost just moist, don't let it dry out or become waterlogged.
6. Store any leftover seeds in the fridge, in an air-tight plastic container with a sachet of silica gel. |
