101 Golden Rules of Fishing
Another fishing book? Not quite. Although ‘101 Golden Rules of Fishing’ delivers enough to satisfy beginners and experienced fish smiths alike, it also dwells on the less tangible aspects of angling – luck, ghosts, catching a monster, the angler’s perfect car, how to blank (catch nothing), how to deal with an angry bailiff, fishing somewhere that’s never been fished before and preparing to make your last ever cast…as if you ever could! Angling isn’t a hobby, a sport, a science or a skill, it isn’t even an art. It’s a mystery and one that takes a lifetime to unravel. ‘101 Golden Rules of Fishing’ is the perfect companion for that journey. Illustrated throughout with delightful and original artwork this charming little book will appeal to anglers of all ages. |

YOUNG, GIFTED - AND FOREVER NINA SIMONETO BE FREE: THE NINA SIMONE STORY
Deluxe 3xCD+DVD Box Set
51 TRACKS SPANNING 1957-93, FROM BETHLEHEM, COLPIX, PHILIPS, RCA, PM, CTI, AND ELEKTRA RECORD LABELS – INCLUDES 24 LIVE TRACKS AND 8 PREVIOUSLY UNRELEASED TRACKS – PLUS 23-MINUTE DVD DOCUMENTARY WITH UNSEEN PERFORMANCES & RARE FOOTAGE
Truly one of of the greatest African-American female vocalists of the 20th century Nina Simone (1933-2003) holds a special position of honor for the fearless role she played as an uncompromising ambas-sador of cultural pride at the height of the Civil Rights and Black Power movements from the late 1950s to the 1970s.
Under-pinning her status as one of the outspoken voices of that tumultuous period in history was Nina Simone’s fascinating and wide-ranging musical taste. Her palette ranged from the 1920s blues and jazz of Duke Ellington and Miles Davis, to the standard songbook of Irving Berlin and the Gershwins, from traditional American balladry and the poetry of Langston Hughes, to the folk and folk rock of Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, Randy Newman, Richie Havens, Sandy Denny, Jimmy Webb (and many others). Her song choices further spanned the repertoire of the Beatles, the Byrds, the Bee Gees, and Hair, to Olatunji and the exciting new strains of Afro-pop and World Music before the genre even had a name – and much more. |
© Sony BMG Music Entertainment.Comprehensive collection...All these musical roots and branches of Nina Simone’s life are explored in depth on TO BE FREE: THE NINA SIMONE STORY, a deluxe new four-disc (three CDs + DVD) box set that is the most comprehensive and wide-ranging collection of Nina Simone’s music ever compiled. Containing 51 audio tracks – eight of them previously unreleased – covering her recording years from 1957 to 1993 for the Bethlehem, Colpix, Philips, RCA (for whom she cut nine LPs that are considered the pinnacle of her output), CTI, and Elektra record labels, plus another nine performances on the 23-minute documentary DVD – the box set will be available on October 27th through SONY BMG.
The Sony BMG archives are the source for all eight previously unreleased tracks, all from Nina’s recordings for the Colpix and RCA labels, spanning 1963-73: “When Malindy Sings/Swing Low Sweet Chariot” (live at the Newport Jazz Festival, 1963); “Ain’t Got No-I Got Life” (alternate version of her cover hit of the Hair song, from the 1968 ’Nuff Said! sessions); Leonard Cohen’s “Suzanne” and Richie Havens’ “No Opportunity Necessary, No Experience Needed” (both live at New York’s Philharmonic Hall, October 1969); “Tanywey” (a newly discovered original, from the 1971 Here Comes The Sun LP sessions); Gilbert Becaud’s (via the Everly Brothers) “Let It Be Me” (live at the Fort Dix military base, 1971); and “Nina” (a free-form jam) and Olatunji’s “Zungo” (both live at New York’s Philharmonic Hall, July 1973). |
 Among the 51 tracks on TO BE FREE are:“I Loves You, Porgy” (recorded for Bethlehem, 1957, from Porgy & Bess; Nina’s first single and first chart record, inspired by Billie Holiday’s version);
“My Baby Just Cares For Me” (Bethlehem, 1957; Nina’s version of the Tin Pan Alley chestnut was revived in 1985 for a Chanel perfume tv spot, jumped onto the UK chart as a #5 smash, and inspired George Michael’s 1999 version);
“Nobody Knows You When You’re Down And Out” (Colpix, 1959; the Bessie Smith Depression-era classic of 1929, issued as a rare non-LP single by Nina three decades later);
“Trouble In Mind” (Colpix, June 1960; live at the Newport Jazz Festival, also a classic 1920s blues, associated with Chippie Hill and Louis Armstrong);
“I Put A Spell On You” (Philips, 1965; the Screamin’ Jay Hawkins rock staple, Nina’s first UK chart single, which enabled her to tour there and in Europe, the market that eventually eclipsed her commercial popularity in the U.S.);
“Feeling Good” (Philips, 1965; from the Anthony Newley-Leslie Bricusse musical The Roar Of The Greasepaint, The Smell Of The Crowd, with a message of freedom that resonated with Nina; revived for a Volkswagen commercial in 1994 that spurred it onto the UK chart, then the six-minute Verve Remixed version in 2002, and on Sony Music TV’s Sex & The City double-CD of 2004);
“Ain’t Got No-I Got Life” (1968, from Hair; previously unreleased alternate version, with improvised, altered lyrics, different than her studio version with over-dubbed ‘live’ applause, which exploded her career in the UK as a #2 hit);
“Do What You Gotta Do” (RCA, 1968; chosen as the B-side of “Ain’t Got No” in the UK, where it hit #7, a lesser-known Jimmy Webb song that inspired a rare non-Jobete cover by the Four Tops the following year);
“To Love Somebody” (RCA, 1968; one of several Bee Gees songs recorded by Nina, did not chart as a U.S. single, but was chosen as the follow-up to “Ain’t Got No” in the UK, where it hit #5);
“Revolution” (PM, April 1969; live in Germany, full-length concert recording of the song whose “Part 1” RCA studio version was an R&B chart hit the same month, Nina’s first original compo-si-tion to chart, with lyrics by her organist and music director Weldon Irvine); and finally,
“To Be Young, Gifted And Black” (RCA, 1969). |

On stage...It was on stage that Simone‘s special magic shined – in fact, it was a live performance demo that led to her first record deal at age 24, with Syd Nathan’s jazz label Bethlehem. Even her 1957 debut LP, a studio date with bassist Jimmy Bond and drummer Albert “Tootie” Heath, was given the live-sounding title Jazz As Played In An Exclusive Side Street Club (though it was also known as Little Girl Blue). Three standards from that album, Duke Ellington’s “Mood Indigo,” “I Loves You, Porgy,” and “My Baby Just Cares For Me,” provide the opening trifecta of TO BE FREE.
24 live performances comprise nearly half of TO BE FREE’s 51 tracks, includ-ing a couple that were studio tracks with overdubbed applause, an all-too common practice back in the day: 1959’s “Wild Is the Wind,” and a ‘70s cover of Tina Turner’s “Funkier Than A Mosquito’s Tweeter.”
TO BE FREE is the ultimate Nine Simone release. Aside form the 3 discs & dvd, it comes complete with previously unseen photography from Simone‘s family archives, photos from the personal collection of Nina Simone historian Sylvia Hampton as well as meticulously researched track-by-track annotations written by David Nathan. |
 LUDOVICO EINAUDI AND KIMMO POHJONEN JOIN THE CONCRETE AND GLASS LINE UPSHOREDITCH, OCTOBER 2ND & 3RD 2008
www.concreteandglass.co.uk
Concrete and Glass, a two-day celebration of cutting edge music and contemporary art based across more than 30 venues in the East End’s cultural core, Shoreditch, are pleased to announce the addition of world-renowned musicians Ludovico Einaudi and Kimmo Pohjonen to their incredibly expansive musical bill. Best-selling Italian contemporary classical composer and pianist, Ludovico Einaudi is one of Classical Music’s biggest success stories of the past 20 years. With phenomenal CDs sales, several international awards for his film scores – which include the score for Shane Meadows’ ‘This Is England’ - and a string of sold out shows at major concert halls world-wide, Ludovico Einaudi’s music is based around sublimely simple melodic beauty that can’t fail to capture the listener’s attention. Presented by Serious Productions and supported on the night by the Owl Project and Alog, this is a rare and golden opportunity to catch one of Classical music’s giants performing in the intimate surrounds of Cargo on Thursday 2nd October. |

Also...Finnish accordionist Kimmo Pohjonen will also be bringing his Earth Machine Music project to Concrete and Glass. Described by Janet Street-Porter as "more fun than tired pop", Kimmo is regarded as one of the most adventurous accordion players in the world whose performances can incorporate electronic effects, samples and loops as he expands and revolutionises accordion playing as we know it. Supported by the Contemporary Music Network and performing at Café 1001 on Friday 3rd October, Earth Machine Music, which was originally performed earlier this year in rural surrounds to rapturous response, brings the sounds and inspiration of the farm to the city with special guest farmers and agricultural machines to be announced.
Concrete and Glass’s art thread is centered on ‘Heart of Glass’, organized in association with the Contemporary Arts Society. A platform for new work by 33 emerging and established artists selected via open submission, Heart of Glass is co-curated by Flora Fairbairn and Paul Hitchman and will be held in the basement of Shoreditch Town Hall until midnight on both the 2nd and 3rd of October. All works have been submitted in response to the space’s eerie atmosphere and will be judged by a panel that will include acclaimed performer Alison Goldfrapp, Saatchi Gallery Director Philippa Adams, Associate Director of White Cube, Irene Bradbury, Director of The Contemporary Art Society Paul Hobson, Times Art Critic Rachel Campbell-Johnston and artists Gavin Turk and Marc Quinn. The panel will select the most interesting work on show with the winner securing a space and promotion for a solo show at Concrete and Glass’s 2009 event. |
 Showing...... at Village Underground, Gerry Fox’s ‘Favela Descending’ is another notable exhibition in Concrete and Glass’s extensive art strand. Shot in Mineira, one of Rio’s most notorious Favelas (the Brazilian equivalent of a shanty town) Gerry was accompanied by local ruling gang members with whom he had to negotiate permission to film. A synchronized six-screen film installation that will take viewers on an all-encompassing journey through seldom seen landscapes, Favela Descending explores the visual textures of the surrounds from a hand held camera point of view, with the screens forming a cube, allowing the viewer to see the Favela from all angles creating a truly disorientating and incongruous experience.
Concrete and Glass is a two day celebration of the most original, innovative and exciting artists and musicians around. Tickets are available at £22.50 or £35 now from www.seetickets.com, www.ticketweb.co.uk, www.concreteandglass.co.uk or in person at Rough Trade East.

HANG THE DJedited, Angus Cargill, Faber and Faber, 2 October 2008, £14.99 HB
Perfect for any music fan, it’s an alternative book of music lists that celebrate popular music in all its eclectic, and sometimes guilty, glory. It’s absolutely brilliant, mixes indie and mainstream, includes contributions from esteemed writers such as Nick Kent, Jon Savage, DBC Pierre, Ali Smith, amongst many others.
From personal blogs to end-of-year critic polls; from the films of Quentin Tarantino to the books of Nick Hornby; music fans have always loved to compile and to indulge, to collect and to hoard. Mixing anecdote, humour, reference and quality anorak behaviour, Hang the DJ is a collection of lists about musical loves and hates, dreams and nightmares. Including contributions from bloggers, journalists, novelists, poets and musicians, it will be the literary equivalent of a great pub jukebox – inspiring, provocative and irresistible – and the perfect gift for all music lovers. |
 including...With nothing else like this book out there, the lists it includes range from the magnificently evocative Spit it Out! The Top Ten Stutter Songs (from My Sharona to Peggy Sue) to The Dirty Dozen: Twelve Great Artists Who Are Terrible Influences (from Lou Reed to Lester Bangs) to I Don’t Want to Go to Rehab: Ten Records by People Obviously in a Terrible State that Are Unfortunately Much Better than Anything They Made Once They Cleaned Up (Death of A Ladies Man, Leonard Cohen to Young Americans, David Bowie).
From the mainstream to the alternative – by way of rock, pop, blues, country, soul, folk, jazz and even a little touch of classical - the music covered here is pretty eclectic, so, as Bob Dylan said on his very first Theme Time Radio Hour, ‘We’re like the New England weather – if you don’t like what you’re hearing,stick around, it’ll change in a minute’.
Angus Carghill, the Editor of Hang the DJ (and who is also a senior Faber editor) is available to talk to on Saturday Live about putting together this book, some of the most interesting lists, and why music fans like him are obsessed with making lists and fascinated with finding obscure facts and new ways of looking at it, and cataloguing the greats. It’s also obviously a great feature which can have music running alongside it!
‘A great gift for music geeks. Formed of each contributor''s themed top 10 bands / records, chapters include the best (and most obscure) Japanese rock bands courtesy of David Peace and Sam Delaney''s great piece on the best music from 1980s teen movies. Other contributors include Ali Smith, Simon Reynolds and DBC Pierre.’

JET 1 ‘DREAM CAR’ MADE FOR MUSIC MAESTRO JOOLS.A replica Jet 1 Rover classic car was presented to Jools Holland yesterday (Monday 6 October) by the stars of Discovery Channel’s hit series, Chop Shop. Mechanic, Bernie Fineman, and maverick designer Leepu Awlia, created the supercar as part of the new series of Chop Shop which returns to Discovery Monday nights at 10.00pm. Unveiled at The Science Museum in West London, the Jet 1 Rover is Jools’ ideal car. He approached master mechanic Bernie and genius designer Leepu during the summer and asked them if they could recreate the illustrious Jet 1 just for him. A huge classic car fan, Jools has dreamed of owning a Jet 1 since he was a young boy. |

Honour...Jools said: “It is a great honour for me to have this built, I''m thrilled to bits. For me the best thing has been seeing it coming together. Since I was 5 years old I have longed for one of these cars, but it has always been unattainable. But now I have one, just for me, it’s incredible. “It''s beautiful, the shape is amazing! Look at that face; it''s the face of Jet 1 that can be driven,” he added. The replica model was hand crafted by Leepu and his team who grafted together a 50-year-old Rover 80 body shell and chassis, 60-year-old Rover 75 body panels whilst Bernie perfected a 30-year-old Jaguar XJ6 engine and suspension to power the masterpiece.
Jools took the Jet 1 for a test drive from the museum to the Albert Hall and it ran perfectly. “I just cannot believe that Bernie and Leepu have managed to recreate this for me, the lines are perfect, and the fact it’s all done by hand – no prefabricated parts – makes it a true work of art.” The team of mechanics who worked on the car wanted to add a personal touch for Jools, so the engine has been engraved with piano keys and Jools’ name. |
 Original...An original Jet 1 is housed at the Science Museum as an example of supreme motoring engineering of the past – the Jet 1 was the first ever gas turbine engine and was originally unveiled on 8 March 1950. It was designed by Spencer King and reached a top speed of 90 mph, but Jools’ version has been modified to reach faster speeds and still maintain its brilliant road handling.
Bernie and Leepu craft cars from sheet metal and reclaimed car parts which are all sourced, fine tuned and altered specifically for each individual motor. They do not use any fibreglass or kit car parts, and Leepu shapes the body work by hand using traditional panel beating methods. They have also presented cars to Martin Kemp and Lawrence Dallaglio, and are currently working on bespoke vehicles for Johnny Vegas and David Ginola.
Chop Shop transmits Mondays at 10pm on Discovery Channel.
Jools Holland’s episodes transmit on Monday 3 and 10 November 2008.
For exclusive previews of the series visit www.discoverychannel.co.ukwww.discoverychannel.co.uk/web/chop-shop-2/
See the original Jet 1 in ''Making the Modern World'' at The Science Museum, London, and from 29 November see a whole host of Japanese cars at the ''Japan Car'' exhibition. The Science Museum is free and entry fees apply to some exhibitions.
