Music buff's choice

| Judith Durham's Diamond Night
Available on DVD is Judith Durham’s ‘Diamond Night’, a film of the Seekers star’s 2003 60th birthday concert at the Royal Festival Hall. Seekers fans may bemoan the shortage of hits but, drawing on music from many aspects of her career - concert pianist and jazz singer among them - this is a charming portrait of Australia’s first pop princess. |

Music for romantic encounters
If there is ‘someone special’ in your life, there are some useful gift ideas around, in particular ‘Inspired’ (V2TV), which gathers some of the more off-beat and inspired cover versions in pop history, ‘Atlantic Gold’ (WSM), which raids the archives of one of the earliest soul labels, and ‘Perfect Love’ (WSM), three CDs of the obvious (‘The Power of Love’) and not-so-obvious (‘Build Me Up Buttercup’, Everything But The Girl’s ‘Missing’). Then there’s Union Square’s bumper five CD set, ‘100 Greatest Classics’, and Classic FM’s four CD compilation ‘Relax and Escape’ (BMG) which, while tending towards the bland world of soundtrack music, should set the mood for those early hours romantic encounters. |

| The Sound of Music - 40th Anniversary Edition
‘The Sound of Music’ is not only one of the most successful films ever made, but also one of the most enduring. The film’s 40th anniversary in 2005 was marked by the (BMG) release of a special edition soundtrack album, boasting extended versions of ‘Sixteen Going on Seventeen’ and ‘Edelweiss’, as well as several pieces of music omitted from the original soundtrack. Needless to say, it’s a veritable treasure trove, not just for long-time fans of the musical, but anyone who’s ever been to one of those uber-ironic Sing-a-long-a-Sound of Music happenings. Altogether now: “The hills are alive . . .” |
