Lack Of Afro New AlbumLack of Afro return to the forefront of the UK music scene with the stunning new album My Groove Your Move. (Released Oct via Freestyle Records) .
The 2008 single ''Touch My Soul'' featured on Colin Murray''s Radio 1 show and featured on most BBC 6 shows including Shaun Keaveny’s Breakfast show, George Lamb, Nemone and Craig Charles. The single also received spins on Russell Brand’s and Mark Lamarr’s Radio 2 shows.
As a multi instrumentalist, in-demand producer and re-mixer, a DJ with his finger on the cutting edge of contemporary sounds, and an ear tastefully cocked to the hippest soul, jazz and funk music from the 60’s and 70’s, Adam Gibbons, the young man at the centre of the Lack Of Afro phenomenon, has already established an unrivalled reputation as one of the most crucial names at work in funk and dance music today.
The LOA story began after excited word spread to the Freestyle Records offices about the sounds he was creating, Freestyles’ head honcho DJ Adrian Gibson instantly signed him and released the stunning debut single “Wait A Minute”. One of the labels fastest selling 12”s ever, it has gone onto sell massive numbers worldwide and appeared on countless compilations.
The subsequent album “Press On” fulfilled his early promise, with Adam playing nearly all the instruments himself. Hailed by iDJ magazine as “one of the greatest albums of the modern funk era”, the many highlights included “Pure Filth”, the stunning “Touch My Soul”, featuring the voice of the late, great Steve Marriott, and the inspired cover of Arctic Monkey’s “When The Sun Goes Down” which is still a firm favourite with DJs the world over - “Press On” has sold over 5,000 copies and counting…
In addition to his original material, the Lack Of Afro remix magic features on over THIRTY releases including tracks from acts as diverse as Tom Jones, Kraak & Smaak, DJ Regal (The Wiseguys), The New Mastersounds, The Hot 8 Brass Band, Flevans, Diesler and Nicole Willis. With his producers hat on, Adam has worked with Damon Minchella & Steve White (Ocean Colour Scene & Paul Weller), as well as for DJ Andy Smith (Portishead).
With “My Groove, Your Move”, the follow-up album released on Freestyle Records in October 2009, Lack Of Afro dispels the ‘difficult second album’ syndrome without even breaking a sweat. Featuring vocal contributions from the amazing Roxie Ray (Dojo Cuts) and YouTube prodigies Wax & Herbal T whilst retaining the signature Lack Of Afro elements, “My Groove, Your Move” is without doubt an even more confident, assured and mature collection than its predecessor.

The Lights Announce New SingleThe Lights new single, January Blues is released in Oct. Produced by renowned producer Gavin Monaghan, who has recently recorded with Travis, Editors & Kings of Leon.
Low Hundreds, the bands previous single received airplay from Janice Long on both her BBC Radio 2 and BBC WM shows, and in May 2009 they were invited into the Radio 2 studios for a live session. The band also play the following festival to promote the new release -
12th Sept - Birmingham Arts Festival
The Lights are a lovely burst of energy, consisting of five bright-eyed individuals with the heart and determination to be heard all over. Their sound is like nobody else, unique, eclectic and intimately epic with a touch of old enough to know better! With a highly promising array of unique sounds, ranging from soft and passionate to loud staggering moments, they''ve perfectly blended each other''s influences and abilities to create one magnetic and appealing force.
‘As lyrically adept as Idlewild but as melodically breezy as a hard rock Teenage Fanclub, they are a challenge to pigeonhole. Imagine Elvis Costello writing lyrics for ELO, fronted by James Dean Bradfield’s younger siblings!’ – NME

For the band, 2008 saw the release of the highly successful single The Score, which openly challenges the guitar band stereotype, described by UK MUSIC REVIEW as ‘Full of charm, energy and personality’. This was followed by the release of their 5 track EP The Fair Weather Travelling Companion, which saw the band moving away from the pop/rock sounds of The Score to something more folk orientated. The EP was met with a wealth of positive reviews.
‘Harmony driven, rich folk with a stirring, disquieting melancholic heart…’ – SUBBA-CULTCHA
‘A melodic folk heart beating away at the core…providing life to the harmonies and rock/indie edges that flesh out the sound.’ – FATEA ONLINE MAGAZINE
Last year saw The Lights gig extensively in and around their hometown of Birmingham and in London, and a larger promotional tour is the plan for 2009. The Lights performed a memorable unplugged acoustic set on the Introducing show on BBC WM in April last year, which went so well that they returned to the station in November to do a full live session.
‘The band made themselves at home, turning off the lights in the studio and setting up a disco ball in the middle of the room. The subsequent atmosphere complemented their acoustic set perfectly; three catchy, uplifting melodies fronted by singer Liz Sheils'' powerful vocals.’ - BBC WM INTRODUCING
The live Lights experience is electric and frequently spine-tingling, rather than a bunch of college kids recycling one catchy hook, they actually sound like a real working class band with the fire, heart and poise that playing and writing together for years has afforded them. |
