Hat, gloves, scalpel and I.V. drip – go equipped for that walk
THIS WEEK'S FEATUREWINDOW SHOPPINGSPECIAL OFFERQUIZARCHIVEWALK OF THE WEEK

This weeks feature
A walk in the park is a big part of the winter, but the park you choose dictates what goes in your pockets.

So a first aid kit complete with syringes and scalpel, a headlamp with a 63 metre range and a 12-volt hairdryer - if the great outdoors has messed up your hair - may not be the first things a hiker grabs for the walk to the pub. Unless the pub is three days’ walk away.

“We do cater for family winter wanderings in the local park, but if something more extreme is your style - if a hike across Yosemite National Park, the Cairngorms or the Kalahari is your way of walking off the season’s over-consumption - then we’ve got the stuff for your pockets or backpack,” said Edward Giles of ExtremeGB.com, the UK’s leading online retailer of extreme sports and outdoor goods.

Take a torch

“Every walker and adventurer should carry a flashlight. We’d recommend the Silva Ultra Bright L1 Headlamp. If you’re crossing country, then there’s a risk you’re going to trip, fall or injure yourself - so add a Lifesystems Medical Pack; if you walk a hundred miles and really must arrive looking good, then there’s a bunch of 12 volt hairdryers and hair tongs you can plug into the cigarette lighter of any four-wheel-drives that have made it as far as you have,” said Edward.

The Silva L1 . . .

provides a light that is bright for distance use, maintains the necessary floodlight for close range work or for moving forward over terrain at speed. It is the world’s brightest LED lamp. It has unique control electronics, allowing the headlamp to give off constant light until only 15% of the total battery capacity is left - at that point, it automatically switches down to power-save to ensure hours of light. The single-hinge headlamp body construction gives perfect balance to the reflector - no more inconvenient adjustments of the reflector upwards due to bad weight balance. Once set, the reflector beam stays where it is. The L1 - at £57.95 - is powered by 4 AA batteries integrated in two separate battery compartments on the anti-slip headband to create the best balance for the user. It has four different light modes: power-save, bright, ultra-bright and blinking alert.

It is also delivered with an external battery case for 4 C batteries, allowing the user to extend the discharge time by 300% - perfect for use in cold conditions when the external battery case should be kept inside the clothes for best performance.
The Lifesystems Travel Medical Pack . . .

at £29.99, is more than a few plasters and bandage. It contains a First Aid primary care guide, antiseptic cleansing tissues, scissors, I.V. cannula (drip needle), hypodermic needles and syringes, braided silk suture and needle, wound closure strips, zinc oxide tape, assorted bandages, safety pins, various dressings, a scalpel, disposable latex gloves, paracetamol tablets and fabric adhesive strip.
“There is also an amazing array of 12-volt travel equipment - as well as hairdryers and so on, there are fans, dehumidifiers, heated blankets, filters and air fresheners,” said Edward. “The usual outdoor gear just doesn’t cut it with some people - especially if they’re adventurers and outdoor types who know the difference between something that looks good and something that actually does the job. Our products have a real ‘wow’ factor for outdoorsy types - they are the best and most fit-for-purpose products in their sector.”
