 | | A circular walk near Lewes in East Sussex |
| | Gardening tips
Approx. 7 miles. One or two muddy stretches when wet!
The walk starts in the village of Newick, about eight miles north of Lewes, on the A272 seven miles east of Haywards Heath. If approaching from Haywards Heath direction, turn right into Allington Road just as you come to the village, proceed for a little over half a mile passing the school on your right, until you come to King George V Playing Field on your right. You can park here. If approaching from Piltdown, turn left on The Green, doubling back on yourself into Church Road, and second right into Allington Road. Proceed for a couple of hundred yards to park in the little car park at King George V Playing Field on your left.
Leave the car park by the Scout Hut, going diagonally left across the playing field (going around the cricket square - this is hallowed ground!) to find a gate just to the right of some trees in the far hedge. Go through the gate and turn left to come out on Church Road. Turn right and walk for about a quarter of a mile to Fonthill, taking the left fork, up between banks of sandstone. Stone was quarried from here and used to build the tower of the parish church in the early 15th century.
In a hundred yards or so, where the lane turns sharply to the right, go up the bank on the left and over a stile. There are fine views to the north, with Newick in the foreground, the school over to the left, and Ashdown Forest in the distance. The mast visible (when clear) to the right is the TV mast at Cross-in-Hand near Heathfield.
Go through the gap in the fence behind you and left, along the edge of the field. A triangulation point is on your right. At the end of the fenceline, follow the scrub around to the right, passing a small pond on your left and, following the hedgeline, continue towards Double Barns Farm. On reaching the driveway, turn right and in about 30 yards go over a stile on your left. Follow the hedge on your right for the length of the field; go through the gate at the end of the hedge and after another 30 yards or so, go left over a stile (or through the gap). Keeping to the right, follow the edge of the little wood until it turns to the right, where you go on straight ahead to the gate in the opposite hedge. |
Hurricane damage, near Newick Park
Go through the gate into the lane and turn right. In about 25 yards go up the bank on your left and over a stile. Go left along the edge of this little wood (or spinney), and where it turns to the left, go straight on but just slightly to the right, making for a house on the far side of the field. Keep to the left of the house, following the hedge, and around to the right in a hundred yards or so. Pass a delightful old half-tiled building on your left, towards the farmyard. At the end of the garden wall, turn left and go down the field to a gate by a pine tree. Go over the pinch -stile and turn right. Go through the next gate and in 25 yards or so go obliquely left to cross the ditches and then to the right heading for a line of alder trees, growing by the River Ouse. Follow the river for a quarter of a mile or so, until you come to the weir.
