Chill out with reds in summer

“I’ve recently read that red wine sales reduce in the summer months due to the heat, and white wines sell better as they can be chilled. What are the best red wines that can be chilled?”
S.B., email

Obviously the half-way house Rose varieties are ideal for light, lunchtime drinking. With regard to red wines the most obvious example to chill would be basic Beaujolais or Beaujolais Villages, or the lighter styles of Cru Beaujolais like Regnie and Brouilly.

Other good lightweight reds would be Anjou Rouge, Chinon or Sancerre Rouge, all from the Loire valley. Starting to make an appearance more often nowadays are some light red wines from Provence and Ventoux, but check out the alcohol levels carefully as these areas also make blockbusters. From Italy, Bardolino is another quite light alternative, and there is always the Rosso version of Lambrusco.
