Tip of the week
Bring your own can be expensive
“I am regularly annoyed at the corkage charges which restaurants apply when I ask to take a special bottle of wine for a special occasion or anniversary etc. What do you think is a reasonable charge?”
B.M., Skipton |
This will obviously vary, depending on the calibre and reputation of the restaurant concerned. Quite frankly, unless the establishment openly announces that it has a ‘bring your own’ policy, they don’t want you to do it.
Where they feel compromised, they are likely to add a dissuading cost to the exercise. It is not uncommon for restaurant mark-ups on wine to be 300%, so this could represent £10 on a reasonable £15 house wine. Therefore anything less than a tenner represents a bad deal for the restaurant.
However, if you are taking 4-6 people into the restaurant, they may view the revenue from six covers as a good trade-off. To summarise, I would think £5 is very reasonable, anything greater, I would drink mineral water! |
